The words of Paul “Consider your calling, brothers and sisters!”(1 Cor 1:26) are an invitation to reflect on our own calling as individuals and communities in our time and con-text. A calling, whether religious or secular, gives life direction and pur-pose. It is a deeply satisfying human experience to feel called to do some-thing important or to be living life in a meaningful way. The idea of the covenant in the Bible is based on the concept that people are called to become partners with the living God to build a community where justice prevails and everyone can thrive. Vocation stories and texts on calling from the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, but also from other religious traditions can be encountered from within in the Bibliodrama workshops.

A personal reflection on a workshop by Inga Motuzaite
Calling in the midst of your life (workshop No. 2 , Text: Mt 9,1-13,
I. Raising a paralyzed man and
II. Calling Matthew and eating with sinners and tax collectors)

I have to admit that I was afraid of this topic of the conference „Consider your calling“. It sounds big and scary –What if God asks me for something big, self-sacrifice etc.
In the beginning of our workshop I took an interesting question from one participant – HOW Jesus said/told that a man followed him immediately? (first day of workshop, Mt 9, 9B).
And many other questions/confusions (Mt 9, 5 etc.). While trying to understand (by thinking not experiencing), I got more confused… So, we got into roles – paralyzed man, Jesus, teachers of law, friend (who brought the paralyzed one), child (some characters are surprising appearing😊…). And it is always surprising how you get answers through experiencing the text. The player went into arguing and conflicts, Jesus decided to be a “bad” character, the paralyzed man and an other got angry on Jesus, a child took care of paralyzed…
I got 2 things for myself from this Bibliodrama play – one answer and one new question.
My finding: it is not finding the right answer (getting an answer) what matters, but care for other. While arguing or involved too much in conflicts you can miss something more important. And my question about getting into roles – does it really always protect us from not getting too much with our personal stories? If personal history of participant comes and takes over with emotions of pain, sorrow, anger etc.? I will write another article about it later😊.
Soft empowerment was another insight from paralyzed man part – HOW do I care, help another? Softly, with respect, assisting, but not doing too much (empower).
And I took 2 songs in my head from this raising and empowerment part:

What are my insights from 2nd part of the Bible text? (Mt 9, 9-13)?
We warmed up with exploring how it is to invite/follow others. I was not very active inviting and I later understood why. After we had play in/by Matthew’s house. I was disciple. And stayed outside the house, not joining a party with sinners and tax collectors. Because there were no Jesus there! It’s like Bibliodrama without Bible and God! Out of my role I’ve tried to convince (INVITE/CALL) others to go out and search for Jesus. And here I’ve got ideas (HOW Jesus called to follow him and me as inviter) – WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU FOLLOW (JESUS), YOU FOLLOW IMMEDIATELY and IT IS EASY TO BECOME AN ACTIVE INVITER MYSELF.

Hmm… I have closed one more gestalt – if God asks me for Big Things… I’ve bought a postcard with pink elephant before the conference and after it that elephant “spoke” to me: Don’t be afraid of Big Things! Play while doing serious things! Empower softly!”
